Definition: Discriminate
Source: Merriam-Webster
intransitive verb
1 a : to make a distinction <discriminate among historical sources> b : to use good judgment
2 : to make a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit <discriminate in favor of your friends> <discriminate against a certain nationality>
I’m curious, when did the secondary definition get added? It’s actually listed as the primary definition at dictionary.com. I particularly love how part b of the primary definition is “to use good judgement”.
So, when does it become unethical to discriminate? When it’s not fair? What’s fair? Until it’s something that people can even talk about, I guess most of us will just continue doing it safely in silence. I wonder how amusing it is for a person with the talent/skill to read others like open books. How painfully predictable we all must seem.
