Good Will Toward Men
You know what? I give what I can, when I can, which is more than most can say. We’ve been quite fortunate in recent years and remember quite well what it’s like to not be, so giving to charity is important to me. So when a guy calls and sounds like he’s talking to me between drags on his cig and a mouthful of nachos and then hangs up on me before I get 2 seconds into my polite, “I’m sorry but I can’t right now”, it hardens my heart for a moment. I’m not sure which was worse, this one or the one where the guy asked me, “What, you don’t like vets? You got a problem with veterans!?!”
In my humble opinion, the odds are that most legitimate charities don’t do a whole lot of cold calling, and I’m pretty sure a legitimate one isn’t going to ask me “what the hell” my “problem is”.
I am going to do my best to give every year more than the last, and to also come up with better comebacks for the jerks of the world.
